Michael Arthur specializes in both drawing the intimate moments of theater, dance and music as well as performing "live drawings", visually accompanying music and performers with projected, real time illustrations. He draws mostly in ink without any pencils or rough drafts: each drawing is a live reaction to the moment. Michael's drawings have appeared at Vanity Fair, The New York Times, The New Yorker, Departures Magazine, NPR, The Huffington Post and many other places. He has performed live drawings at Joe’s Pub, City Winery, Lincoln Center, The Indianapolis Symphony, La Jolla Playhouse and many other venues around the country.

For the last six months or so, I’ve been drawing up at the legendary Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock. Check out the store for a few limited edition prints from these shows, including drawings of Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Matt Nathanson, Jorma Kaukone and Amy Helm and the Midnight Ramble Band. I make these prints in small batches, because I imagine they’ll be especially meaningful for the people who were there, but I’ve been touched to see that folks from all over have been reaching out about them. If you want to take a look at the ones currently available, check out the store!

Due to popular demand, here’s a limited edition print of The National at the Bearsville Theatre, drawn at their surprise show on March 4, 2023. There are only fifty available in the store, HERE. There are only a few of these left, so if you want one, now is the time!

A new video, made with my buddy Peter Salett for his Blue Palace project. Love this song and had a great time making the video with Peter. Hope you like it!

I made this video to accompany the It’s No Secret podcast, available wherever fine podcasts are found. It tells the tale of the epic (failed) audition that Twang Twang Shockaboom did for Tommy Mottola and the heads of CBS Records a long, long time ago. Come for the showbiz story; stay for Mariah.

A Little Night Music, drawn for Symphony Space’s gala event honoring Stephen Sondheim’s classic musical. The event, CELEBRATING SONDHEIM: SONGS FROM A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC took place on April 25, 2022.

Symphony Space celebrated Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music on April 25th with an all star concert presentation. They asked me to create this piece, a live drawing done while listening to the original Broadway soundtrack a few weeks earlier. Limited edition prints were given to gala attendees and a large print, signed by myself and the cast, was auctioned to raise money for Symphony Space.
