Last Friday, I got to draw live—projected on a big screen as I drew in ink and marker—with Threeds, a three-oboe band—at joespub.
I met the band through one of their members, Katie Scheele; she approached me a few years back about doing the cover art for their debut album. They came to my studio in Brooklyn and played while I drew them for the cover portrait (up top there).
Then they asked me to draw along live with them at Joe’s Pub for the album release party of their second disc. Above is the drawing I did at soundcheck and below that, the actual show drawing—each individual section of the sketch is a song.
It was a great night of wonderful music and improv drawing…

A couple of years back, Summerstage in Central Park invited me to draw their shows. I ended up sitting in the wings or in the photo pit, sketching away for the day of Brazilian bands, Gil Scot Heron, the Flaming Lips and Public Enemy (among others)…

Uncle Walt’s Band is both Austin music’s royalty and best kept secret. David Ball, Walter Hyatt and Champ Hood combined sweet harmonies, jazz, chords and Beatlesque songwriting for a unique twang that influences the Austin music scene to this day. Hyatt died in a Florida plane crash, Hood passed away from cancer a few years back (his son Warren Hood keeps his legacy alive) and David Ball became a music superstar, but if you’ve got the time and inclination seek out their few albums (compiled after the band’s dissolution); they’re breathtaking.
I love this band …

Last night I got to go to Langston Hughes’s old Church in Lawrence, Kansas and draw along with the St. Luke Choir and the Matt Otto Jazz Quintet for two sets as part of the Free State Festival. It was a joyous night of music and art and I’m grateful that the Festival invited me along to be a part of the festivities…It’s always a thrill to hear music for the first time as I’m drawing it and it’s especially great when there are two packed houses in a row. That said, there’s something especially powerful about leaping into the creative unknown in a church full of congregants…

Ben Watt (Everything But The Girl) made his solo debut last night at Joe’s Pub, but he brought along a guitar legend for the assist. Bernard Butler accompanied Watt throughout the night and it was one of those breathtaking Joe’s Pub shows where you know you’re seeing something special …
